I believe Real is the new perfect. I believe in the beauty of your life. Not someone else’s Pinterest version. I want to see you and your life the way it really is, in all its messy, beautiful, unmatching, perfectly imperfect glory. There is art and beauty in your normal moments. Seeing them will lead you to gratitude. I believe the everyday moments are the ones you’ll miss the most.
I believe people are inherently valuable and interesting. I think everyone should try a triathlon at least once. I think moments make up lifetimes, which make up our history. I believe pictures look better on a wall than on a disc.
If you want to buy matching outfits and find a field full of flowers I can refer you to lots of great photographers who will take a beautiful picture of everyone in your family looking at the camera. But that doesn’t make my heart sing. That picture doesn’t tell me a thing about who you are and what your family’s story is.
My favorites: Jesus, yoga, running, homemade soup, a great Manhattan, garden growing, a good double-play or out at home plate, an herby gin, a quick wit, making things by hand, a good mystery, astrophysics, Nacho Libre, Sherlock, Bon Apetit magazine, pepper on my popcorn, kale in my smoothies, The Brothers K, CS Lewis, Annie Dillard and Rilke, Notes from the Tilt-a-Whirl, living room dance parties and movie night cuddling with my husband and four children. On any given summer morning you might find me (miraculously) alone watering my big garden or walking my sweet Labradoodle, Molly, through my favorite Tacoma neighborhoods to a great coffee shop where I will hesitate about what to order and eventually get my standard: a cortado.
Life is too short for: perfectionism, pants without stretch, ironing, and not taking enough pictures.
This is what I know for sure: sometimes the simple moments matter the most.
Check out some of my other creative projects: I am one of the founding members at The Sham of The Perfect, an international photography collective. I am also one of the founding members at This Day and Every Day and One Dandelion.
