When I photograph families in their home I always ask the kids to show me their rooms, their special collections and favorite objects. It’s a powerful space for them- a place where they have more freedom and autonomy to express themselves and create a sanctuary. It’s also probably a part of your home and family culture that changes the most quickly as kids grow, so documenting it as it is in this season feels important. Imagine being able to show your grandkids photographs of your bedroom growing up.

I still remember details from my childhood bedroom, and how it evolved through my teen years. What do you remember from your bedrooms as a kid? What felt uniquely “you”?

Family life isn’t easy. Its not all laughing and fun. We know this. Our kids aren’t always cute. Sometimes we don’t even like them. But we keep showing up. We love them unconditionally. We model grace and consistency. We heal our nervous systems and unlearn our trauma responses, we help shape their nervous systems and create new emotional possibilities. This is how worlds get changed.

From a series I made in San Miguel de Allende last year during a @santafeworkshops with @samabellteacher . The series is called La Luz Perdida, The Lost Light, because of my estrangement to my maternal homeland. I gifted my mother this image for Christmas and we both cried.
