From an extended family session at a funky little beach cabin built 75 years ago by the great- grandfather’s hands. Three generations together for the first time in 5 years. A reunion worth celebrating (and documenting).

Came to visit her all the way in North Carolina only to find out she watched the last episode of This is Us WITHOUT US because she was homesick. The nerve!

Mamas, if you are deep in the trenches right now, pouring yourself out day in a day out physically and emotionally, unable to imagine a moment of rest, much less a whole week away- take heart!

Remember your job is to raise adults, not kids. Someday you will cross a threshold of getting to have your children as FRIENDS. You will walk down streets with them without holding their hands worrying they might run into traffic. You will sit in restaurants and talk about politics, theology, current events, books and ideas. You will learn from each other and they will make you laugh with surprising humor that is entirely their own. You might stay in a small mountain cabin during a rainstorm and wonder at the way petrichor is different in this part of the country. It will be so fun! Keep your eye on the prize.

This boy. Currently working his ass off on a fishi

This boy. Currently working his ass off on a fishing boat in Alaska. The stuff of stories he will tell his grandchildren someday. Bald eagles like common pigeons, humpbacks and porpoises as companions. Last night he made the mistake of telling me about the different ways he could be potentially maimed with the net and winch. Stuff a mama’s heart shouldn’t imagine. “I’d be fine if I lost a couple fingers” he tells me.

Can’t wait to adventure together again. This is from our last trip down the California coast in our trailer, Tiny.

Xox my boy. Keep your wits about you. Say hello to the whales and fish. Please come home with all your digits. Don’t forget to write it all down.
